I don't think it's so much an issue of "lowering standards" as it is learning that the image you had growing up of a prince (or princess) riding up to you on a white horse and riding off into the sunset with you is a fantasy. I think that we all idealize the perfect mate.
Now, for your original question - all three. I am wise enough now to know that I was lucky to find someone who fit quite a few (but not all) of my original (somewhat overblown) standards.
